Objectives
- To promote and strengthen genetic counselling education and training globally by supporting the development of accessible, evidence-based and culturally appropriate educational resources and programmes for genetic counsellors, healthcare professionals, students and trainees, particularly in countries with limited access to genetic counselling services.
- To facilitate international collaboration and capacity building in genetic counselling education through the sharing of curricula, teaching resources, best practices, educational expertise and training opportunities, including webinars, workshops, mentorship programmes and other continuing professional development activities.
Main activities
- Advances in Genetics and Genomics Webinar Series for non-genetics health professionals.
- Developing and updating core curriculum guidelines for Genetic Counselling training, worldwide.
- Organising and running genetic counselling workshops at Human Genome Meetings.

The HUGO Genetic Counselling Standing Committee invites the global genetic counselling community to an upcoming webinar, “Who Are We & What Do We Do? Your Voice in Shaping the Genetic Counselling Profession Globally.”
As genetic counselling continues to evolve across different countries, healthcare systems, and professional settings, there is growing value in understanding the principles and purpose that connect genetic counsellors worldwide. This webinar will explore how shared professional values can help shape a clearer and more inclusive understanding of the genetic counselling profession across diverse roles and contexts.
About the Webinar
The session will explore ongoing research into the core values and shared purpose of genetic counselling internationally, with particular attention to the experiences of professionals working across clinical, laboratory, research, educational, and other practice settings.
The discussion will consider how a stronger understanding of these shared values may contribute to professional development, advocacy, recognition, and the long-term sustainability of genetic counselling as a profession.
The webinar will also introduce an upcoming opportunity for genetic counsellors around the world to contribute their perspectives and experiences. These contributions will help build a broader understanding of what defines and connects the profession across different cultural, professional, and healthcare contexts.
About the Speaker
Chinmayee B. Nagaraj is a certified genetic counsellor in the United States with more than a decade of experience spanning clinical, laboratory, educational, and research roles at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital.
She is also a doctoral candidate at the University of Technology Sydney, Australia, under the supervision of Professor Alison McEwen. Her doctoral research explores the core values and shared purpose of the genetic counselling profession across diverse roles and practice settings worldwide.
